Identity fraud

Identity fraud occurs when a person establishes two or more identities with a particular organisation. To achieve this a person needs to establish two sets of records with public authorities. This is difficult to do particularly when the records require photo-id and require the person to have a face to face interview. Passports and driver's licences both require photo-ids and so are a reliable source of identification.

As the data sources are checked rather than a paper copy of the data sources this makes it unlikely that individuals will succeed in establishing two separate identities. Even if they do and they are detected they will be able to be successfully prosecuted because there will be evidence of their wrong-doing.

Identity Theft

Identity theft occurs when someone uses another person's identity without their permission or knowledge. It is difficult to do because an identity thief has to know several things about a person and be able to use those things without the knowledge of the victim. Most identity theft takes place within families or friends and is difficult to detect electronically. However, with the addition of biometric markers the likelihood of the theft going undetected is remote and when discovered the likelihood of a successful prosecution is high.

Isolation of Data Sources

Edentiti does not need to store any verification information or any biometric information. Most information is stored in source document organisations or in specialised biometrics organisations. If Edentiti does store information it is stored in separate data stores and it is only accessed by someone who has identified themselves.

This dispersal of data is a protection of privacy and a protection from fraud and theft.
